DAY 9 OF 366

Digesting the Word

Reading: Joshua 1:1-9

Key Verse: “Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” verse 8

A very important principle of physical fitness is to digest food that is eaten. Digestion is the process where your food is changed into you! Those suffering from bulimia eat their food but never digest it and consequently can become weak and listless. Throughout the Bible we are introduced to the principle of meditation. But notice this is meditating on God’s word not your own belly button!

Meditation is to the spirit what digestion is to the body. The word and process is similar in definition and practice to rumination in certain animals which chew the cud. For example, cows will bring back food and chew it again and again before finally passing it into their stomachs for digestion. To meditate is to chew over a portion of God’s word until it becomes part of us in our thinking and behaving. It is all too easy for Bible verses to “go in one ear and out the other” but Jesus said that we should abide in Him and let His words abide in us (John 15:7).

Meditating on Scripture will lead us to speaking Scripture and “doing” Scripture in our daily lives. Then we will build spiritual strength and stamina to “be prosperous and successful”.

Prayer: Lord teach me to meditate on Your word so I digest it properly to build spiritual strength and stamina
