Drinking the Holy Spirit
Reading: John 7:37-44
Key Verse: “If a man is thirsty, let him come to me and drink ... by this he meant the Spirit” verses 37, 39
We continue the concept of parallels of truth by considering that just as drinking fluids are vital for our bodies, so drinking of the Spirit is essential for our spirits. We can live for about sixty days without food but only about ten days without water. In the recent rescue of Thai boys from a cave, even though they had no food they were able to survive by drinking water springing from the rock. Although weak they were all recovered alive.
In many places in the Bible the Holy Spirit is likened to flowing, living water. How do we drink of the Holy Spirit? If we want to “drink” of the atmosphere of a Cup Final at Wembley we must be there; just watching on TV from a distance is insufficient. Similarly, if you are thirsty for the Holy Spirit you must “come to Jesus” in your heart and not keep your distance. You may also need people to pray for you as in Samaria and Ephesus (Acts 8:17, 19:6). Paul himself received the Holy Spirit when Ananias prayed for him (Acts 9:17).
But “drinking” the Holy Spirit is not a one off experience because we are to “be continually filled with the Spirit” (Eph.5:18).
Prayer: Jesus I come to you to drink of the Holy Spirit
