Heart for the House
Reading: Haggai 1:1-1-15
Key Verse: “Give careful thought to your ways ... Because of my house which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with his own house.” Verses 5, 9
This month’s devotional is all about establishing right priorities in our lives. Haggai rebuked God’s people because they had prioritised their own houses to such a degree that God’s house, the temple, lay in ruins. We should devote time to our career, friends, home and hobbies but not to the extent that we have no time, resources or affection left for God and His kingdom.
Jesus phrase, “seek first the kingdom of God” was part of a sermon which concluded with the story of two men building houses; one on rock and one on sand. They both heard the same words of Jesus but one applied them to his life whilst the other ignored them. The life of the wise man flourished but the life of the foolish man suffered destruction.
To put God’s kingdom first and establish godly priorities is good for us. The people of Haggai’s day rose up in faith to prioritise God’s House. The result was that the House became a place of glory and the people received God’s blessing and His signet ring of authority (Hag.2:19-23).
As we develop a Heart for God’s House in our own time we too will experience His glorious presence, blessing and authority!
Prayer: Lord, I give my heart to build Your House and your kingdom in Jesus name.
