Together - Daily Devotional

DAY 364 OF 366

New Testament Giving

Reading: 1 Cor.16:1-4

Key Verse: “On the first day of every week, each of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income” verse 2

The NT rarely mentions tithing except for example where Jesus both condones and condemns the Pharisees (Matt.23:23, Luke 18:12). Today’s passage is regarded by some as only referring to special support for believers in Jerusalem (see Acts 11:27-30). However, it does highlight certain principles of giving to God. It should be “for God’s people” (excludes general charitable donations), regular (first day of the week), universal (each of you), proportionate and significant (in keeping with his income). David said he would not offer to God that which cost him nothing (2 Sam.24:21-25).

The tithe is not meant to be regarded as a compulsory tax but an acknowledgement that the other 90% is also God’s and we are His stewards (1 Chron.29:14). In the early Church people sold surplus possessions of land and houses to meet the needs of others (Acts 2:44-45, 4:32-37). Ananias and Sapphira were not punished for withholding money but for lying to the church of God about the value of assets they sold; the land and proceeds of sale were theirs to keep or dispose of as they saw fit (Acts 5:1-11). Contrast their attitude with Joseph who wholeheartedly sought first the kingdom of God and was re-named Barnabas - “Son of Encouragement!”

Prayer: Lord may my giving help build Your kingdom as I encourage others
