The House of God
Reading: Exodus 36:1-7
Key Verse: “And so the people were restrained from bringing more, because what they already had was more than enough to do all the work” verses 6-7
If we are to “seek first the kingdom of God” then His house should be one of our top priorities. A house is where people live and God has always desired to live in intimate relationship with His people. The Israelites built a special tent called a Tabernacle constructed of precious metals, expensive jewels and valuable materials. The Tabernacle was eventually superseded by the Temple and later the person of Jesus. What has not changed however is the attitude of those who “seek first the kingdom of God”. The Israelites were so excited at the prospect of contributing to a place where God would presence Himself that they even gave too much!
In the NT people still needed to assemble in a building to be together for corporate worship and teaching. At times this was in people’s homes (Rom.16:5) or public halls (Acts 19:9). Eventually special buildings were constructed for gathering together and providing facilities for community events. The term “house of God” now refers primarily to an assembly or local family of believers (1 Tim.3:15, 1 Pet.4:17). But whether it’s a people or a place it is a priority for us to be excited and enthusiastic contributors of our time, talents and treasures!
Prayer: Lord lead me to be a significant contributor to Your house
