Water of Trust

Reading: Jer.17:5-8

Key Verse: “He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit” verse 8

The year 2018 has been a year of drought. Heat wave conditions existed throughout Europe, America, Japan and Australia with temperatures exceeding 45 degrees. A number of people died particularly in Greece where fire swept across the land. In the UK there have also been numerous grassland fires and water restrictions as reservoirs were seriously depleted.

Many trees and plants have died in the extreme drought with prices of some foods increased due to limited supply. In contrast to such devastation some trees near me continued to flourish and produce an abundance of fruit. How was this possible? They were planted by a stream and their roots were always able to absorb hidden life giving water.

Jeremiah contrasted those who trusted in God with those who simply depended on human resources. The latter would be like a shrivelling bush in a desert whereas those who trusted in God would be as fit as a fruitful tree. Adverse conditions will affect all of our lives at various times. But those who continue to trust the Lord are able to absorb hidden life giving resources of the Holy Spirit. Such a person is able to wear a T shirt with a slogan, “No Worries Mate”.

Prayer: Lord thank You that even in adverse conditions I need not fear because I have no worries through my trust in You
