Water of Meditation
Reading: Psalm 1:1-6
Key Verse: “on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither.” verse 2-3
We have already considered the process of meditation on Scripture in the context of digesting food. However, so important is this principle that it is repeated here from a different perspective. A tree will only grow and flourish if it has access to water. Whereas yesterday water referred to trust, today it relates to meditating on God’s word. The important part to note here is the purpose and role of the roots. In a plant, roots are hydrotropic; in other words they actively seek out water and feed the plant accordingly.
Isaiah 37:31 says, “take root below and bear fruit above”. Fruit is dependent upon the roots. Therefore if we are to grow and be spiritually fit we must apply the lesson of how a tree flourishes to our own lives. We should actively seek out God’s word to feed and develop our spirit. However, it is not mere knowledge we seek but insight and understanding. In Psalm 119:97-104 the writer acknowledged that his wisdom was due to meditation on Scripture. In fact he had more insight than all his teachers. How can we know more than our teachers? –knowledge can transform into greater insight and help us know God Himself more deeply!
Prayer: May the roots of my spirit go ever deeper into You as I meditate on Your word
