DAY 16 OF 366

Spiritual Rest

Reading: Isaiah 40:28-31

Key Verse: “but those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength” verse 31 (NKJV)

One modern concern is to achieve a fulfilling work life balance. Many people are rejecting the lure of financial inducements to pursue a career which allows them more time with family, friends and hobbies. Rather than live in a state of permanent exhaustion, such people have exchanged lucrative work for more leisure time. Rest is important for us, which is partly why God introduced a Sabbath non work day. Everyone needs downtime to recharge their batteries. In fact today’s world is largely dependent on recharging mobiles and laptops with new bursts of energy to make them work effectively. The same is true of us. However, the Sabbath is not just about a rest from physical activity but a time to remember God and recharge our spirits with His power.

Notice that even youths grow tired and weary but those who wait on the Lord renew their strength. In the original language, the word renew has the meaning of “exchange”. As we wait or rest or are still before the Lord we exchange our human strengths for His supernatural abilities. Paul encouraged us to experience God’s power at work within us to achieve more than we could ask or imagine (Eph.3:20). Let us enter His rest.

Prayer: Lord I rest in You and rely on Your power to energise my life
