Healing for the Broken Hearted
Reading: Isa.61:1-7
Key Verse: “He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release for the prisoners” verse 1
When Jesus began His ministry he quoted this very passage as prophetic of His calling (Luke 4:16-19). Although people can be physically fit they can still struggle with mental and emotional problems which can trap them like a fly in a spider’s web. They struggle to be free but exhaust themselves in the process. On the outside they can appear to have it all together yet on the inside they can be broken by life events such as divorce, bereavement, addictions and so on. We now recognise Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as a medical condition.
Jimmy Ruffin, Boyzone and others have recorded a song; “What becomes of the Broken Hearted”. The lyrics speak of broken dreams and broken relationships resulting in a life “filled with sadness and confusion ... all that’s left is an unhappy ending”. Jesus not only forgives sin but He can also heal a shattered heart. He does not undo the original traumatic event, but He breaks its power to control our emotions and thoughts. He sets us free to experience the everlasting joy of salvation now and a blessed ending when God will wipe every tear from our eyes and there will be no more pain (Rev.21:4).
Prayer: Lord I receive Your healing for a broken heart so that I may be your instrument to heal the broken hearts of others
