All Over Protection
Reading: Eph.6:10-18
Key Verse: “Put on the full armour of God so that you can stand against the devil’s schemes” verse 11
The apostles were so keenly aware of spiritual opposition that they emphasised its existence and how to overcome it. Both James and Peter urge us to resist the devil (James 4:7, 1 Pet.5:8-9). Paul explains how. Yesterday we saw new Holy Spirit attitudes of love, forgiveness and honesty could overcome anger, bitterness and deceit. Today Paul uses the parallel of a soldier’s armour to illustrate how temptation may be defeated. Twice he uses the phrase “full armour” to stress the importance of all over protection. It’s no good walking in a rainstorm wearing a coat but without a hat or umbrella!
God had provided different types of protection from different forms of spiritual attack. For example, truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation and God’s word. Paul links these to various parts of the body for illustration. A Roman soldier’s shoes had a studded sole which enabled him to march and stand without slipping. The message of the gospel we are always prepared to share is that we have peace with God based on His grace alone and so we can stand against any accusation of the enemy without slipping in our faith (Rom.5:1).
Let us put on God’s whole armour so we are fully protected.
Prayer: Lord show me how to put on the full armour of You have provided
