Eating the Word
Reading: Rom.10:8-17
Key Verse: “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.” verse 17
You may have noticed in yesterday’s reading that the “man of God” became spiritually fit and equipped by knowing Scripture. This is not the dry knowledge of the Pharisees which can merely “puff us up” but spiritual understanding which builds us up (1 Cor.8:1).
We have seen that God’s word is likened to milk and meat. Jeremiah says, “When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight” (Jer.15:16). Some people, especially those suffering from anorexia are weak because they do not eat enough food (see 1 Sam.14:24-30). Others are weak because they do not eat enough of the right food! The same can be true with our approach to the word of God. We do not read enough or we only read that which is “sweet” and easily digestible. But Paul is clear that faith comes from the message of God’s word. Sometimes when we experience doubts and periods of lack of faith we should look no further than our reading habits.
We need to turn off the TV, computer and mobile to focus our attention on to the Bible – and not just for a quick snack but “solid food for the mature” on a constant, regular basis (Heb.5:14).
Prayer: Lord may I receive from Your word all the goodness You have put into it
