The Chosen One
A long time ago, God chose the ancient people of Israel to be His light to the world. He promised Abraham that he and his family would bless all the people on earth (Genesis 12:1–3). But as we have read, God’s people chose to disobey Him. They were not God’s light to the world.
Should God have killed all the people of Israel? He had that right. He would have been justified in punishing them or choosing a new group of people. But would it have been loving?
God could have chosen a new people to replace Israel, but He didn’t. Instead, Jesus did what Israel could not do. He came to earth to offer us God’s love and life even when we are disobedient. That shows us God is completely loving. He does not punish us in the way we deserve. He does what we cannot do. That’s the greatest news in the world! Read the passage from Romans 5:6–21. Think about these questions as you read:
- What does it mean when the Bible says that we were God’s enemies? (Romans 5:6–10)
- While we were still God’s enemies, He sent His Son (Jesus) to die for us. Why? (Romans 5:8–10)
- What kind of relationship do you have with God because of Jesus? (Romans 5:10–11)
- How can people be made right with God? (Romans 5:18–21)
Make It Personal
- Do you love your enemies? Why did Jesus love His enemies?
- Do you ever think God does not love you? If so, why?
- Why do so many people fear death? What hope does this passage bring to people who do?
