What Do You Want?
What do you want? It’s a simple question to ask, but hard to answer. When Jesus was facing His most difficult night, He asked God to spare Him from suffering and dying on a cross. But Jesus chose to follow God’s plan because He was committed to doing what God wanted. Obeying God was even more important to Jesus than saving His own life.
Read about Jesus’ time in the Garden of Gethsemane in Matthew 26:36-46. Consider the tough choices He made. Think about these questions as you read:
- What did Jesus say He wanted to do in the Garden of Gethsemane? (Matthew 26:36)
- What did Jesus want His followers to do? (Matthew 26:38)
- What did Jesus ask His Father when He prayed? What did Jesus choose to do? (Matthew 26:39, 42)
- What did Jesus’ followers do? (Matthew 26:40)
- Were they able to do what was right? Why or why not? (Matthew 26:41)
Make It Personal
- Have you ever faced something you knew you should do but didn’t want to? What did you choose to do? What were the results?
- Have you ever wanted to do something you were not able to do? Give an example.
- Peter and the other followers wanted to stay awake and pray, but they were too sleepy. Jesus told His followers to pray for strength against temptation. He wants you to pray for the same thing.
