Spiritual Infants
Reading: 1 Cor.3:1-4
Key Verse: “Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly – mere infants in Christ.” verse 1
The next stage in life from a baby is when we become an infant or child. Paul wrote to the Corinthians and complained they were behaving just like people in the world. Their lives were characterised by jealousy, quarrels and sectarianism. As such they were “mere infants in Christ” who were easily bored and focussed on themselves. They were like the fickle children Jesus spoke of in Matt.11:16-17 who were abusive and nothing pleased or satisfied them for very long.
In Galatians 4, Paul explains that we should no longer behave like immature children but as grown up sons and heirs of God. He particularly desires that “Christ is formed in you”. They had forgotten and ignored the grace of God which would give them a firm foundation. Instead they were like children who were, “tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men” (Eph.4:14).
To mature from a baby to an infant is a good but it is bad to remain an infant and be like the childish Corinthians. Paul wrote that to become a man involved putting childish ways behind him (1 Cor.13:11).
Prayer: Lord I put childish ways behind me to become more like Jesus
