Lamb
Reading: Isaiah 53:1-12
Key Verse: “he was led like a lamb to the slaughter ... For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors” v.7, 12
In this Old Testament passage Jesus is called a lamb. It is a description John the Baptist repeats when he says, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). It is also an appellation Jesus bears for all eternity for in Revelation He is called the Lamb who bought salvation and rightfully sits on the heavenly throne with His Father (Rev.5, 22).
Why is Immanuel, Mighty God referred to as a lamb? In the Old Testament my failings and sins separated me from God and I was no longer at one with Him. Perhaps like a forgetful husband offering flowers and chocolates to an upset wife, could I offer something to God to make things right? Perhaps then I could be “at one” with Him? But I was impure so a pure and innocent lamb was offered as a substitute sacrifice as an at-one-ment for my sins to restore my relationship to God.
Jesus is the pure and willing Lamb who offered Himself on the cross as the one and only perfect substitute sacrifice for me.
Prayer: I worship You Jesus, the innocent Lamb of God, my perfect substitute sacrifice. Hallelujah!
