Jesus
Reading: Matt.1:18-25
Key Verse: “She will bear a Son, and you shall cal His name Jesus [in Hebrew means Saviour], for he will save His people from their sins [that is, prevent their failing and missing the true end and scope of life, which is God” v.21 (Amplified Translation)
Here is His greatest name and fullest explanation of His person – JESUS. He is Immanuel – God with us; yet God with us would not be of lasting eternal benefit to us if He only helped us in this life. The Amplified translation explains that the name Jesus means, “Saviour”.
Jesus is a teacher, healer, counsellor, and friend yet ultimately He did not come to simply teach, heal, advise or befriend. Jesus came to Save. Save who? You and Me. Save from what? From the effect of our failings and guilt of sins which estranged us from God. If you have a criminal record, even if its a long time ago for a minor offence, you can be prevented from entering certain countries. Our spiritual record hinders us in this life and prevents us entering an eternal live in a heavenly paradise with God.
As I write, a foolish man was rescued a mile out at sea in a child’s inflatable dingy by the RNLI. He could not save himself. We cannot save ourselves but Jesus, our Saviour, reaches out to rescue us from drowning in our sins, sets us upon a Rock and endorses our passport to heaven.
Prayer: Thank you Jesus that You came to save me from my sins and give me eternal life
