I Am the Light of the World
Reading: John 9:1-11
Key Verse: “While I am in the world, I am the Light of the World” v 5
The Bible often uses the symbolism of light and dark to describe those who respond to God’s truth and those who do not. We sometimes speak of a “light-bulb moment” when we realise something and to “see the light” is an idiom to convey that we understand a truth at last. In comparison, the “Dark Ages” is a term that refers to a perceived period of cultural and economic decline in the Middle Ages.
Ignorance of God and His ways is sometimes likened to blindness as with the Pharisees who would lead others into a ditch (Matt.15:12-14). Into the darkness of this ignorance of God and the darkness of people’s guilty hearts, Jesus comes with the message that He is the Light of the World. Instead of flailing around in the ignorance of institutionalised religion and the darkness of guilty hearts, Jesus declares that He alone is the One who can truly explain the ways of God and can light the path to an intimate relationship with Him. Compared to the darkness of the period of the Judges when “everyone did as he saw fit” (Jud.21:25), Jesus is the Light of true understanding and revelation.
Prayer: Jesus thank You for lighting my way to an ever closer relationship with God the Father
