I Am the Resurrection and the Life
Reading: John 11:17-44
Key Verse: “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies’” v 25
The theme of life itself is often addressed in the New Testament but interestingly alternative Greek words can be used to describe different types of life. This differentiation disappears when translated into the one English word “life”. Simplistically, the Greek word Psyche can be used to describe mere physical existence and the human soul. However, the Greek word Zoe is often used in the context of the spiritual and supernatural eternal life that only God can possess. Psyche is as different to Zoe as a torch is to the sun. So in John 1:4 it states that “in him [Jesus] was life – Zoe.” As human beings we have Psyche life but Jesus has Zoe life. We are often concerned with what we should eat or the clothes we should wear or the career or goals we should pursue. Jesus message is that real life and real living are not about earthly riches but heavenly treasures (Luke 12:13-34).
Jesus gives supernatural Zoe life to those who believe in Him and so even when our natural Psyche life comes to an end we will not die but experience His resurrection life in an eternity of Paradise with our heavenly Father.
Prayer: Thank You Lord that You are the Resurrection and because of you I have eternal life
