I Am Gentle and Humble in Heart

Reading: Matt.11:28-30

In addition to the I Am’s of John there are other important I Am statements about the nature of Jesus. Today we focus on Jesus own declaration that He was Gentle and Humble in heart. He specifically spoke to those who were weary and burdened and promised them rest and peace from stress and striving. Our world is a world of stress. The stress of finances, the stress of relationships, the stress of work, the stress of our busy lives and especially the stress of religious duties.  People face “burn out” because they have adopted the world’s culture of striving to live without reference to a loving and caring God.

Into this culture Jesus appears not as another demand but as a different way of living based on gentleness and humility instead of striving and trying to please others. Yoked or united with Him we learn “rhythms of grace” where we relax and through prayer, simple trust and God inspired activities we see the Lord adjust and meet our needs. 

Jesus is not a demanding dictator or never satisfied boss but is gentle and we can therefore trust Him to understand, truly care and provide for us.

Prayer: Jesus, I come to You, lay down my burdens and take up rhythms of grace with You
