Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ
Reading: 2 Cor.13:11-14
Key Verse: “May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” v.14
If you had to sum up all the qualities of the person of Jesus Christ in one word, what would it be? Paul faced this challenge when writing to the Corinthian church and chose this three-fold blessing. God is characterised by the word love, the Holy Spirit by fellowship and Jesus by the word grace. Words are designed to communicate ideas, thoughts, concepts, feelings and information. Mark Twain said that the difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightening and a firefly. The right word illuminates the sky with peels of heavenly thunder whilst the almost right word is a buzzing, glowing speck in the vegetation. The right word to describe Jesus is – Grace.
Many have tried to describe grace. It is defined as “unmerited favour”, “kindness”, “mercy” and so on. Ultimately it is an attitude of compassion resulting in giving someone a benefit they do not deserve. The attitude without the accompanying action is not grace and action without attitude is mere duty or obligation. The grace of Jesus actively seeks out the undeserving and bestows upon them the favour of heaven.
