DAY 49 OF 366

Man of Prayer

Reading: Mark 13:32-42

Key Verse: “He fell to the ground and prayed” v.35

You might think that if Jesus was God in human flesh and powerfully filled with the Holy Spirit He would have little need of prayer. Not a bit of it! Much of the New Testament is taken up with accounts of his prayer life and teachings on prayer. Luke 5:16 reports that, “Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” Before He chose the twelve apostles from His group of disciples, “Jesus went out into the hills to pray, and spent the night praying to God” (Luke 6:12).

He taught us the “Lord’s Prayer” in Matthew 6 and Luke 11 before explaining that prayer was really about a relationship rather than presenting God with a shopping list. Jesus prayed before raising Lazarus from the dead and for Simon Peter to be strong. He prayed for His disciples in John 17 including you and me and in Luke 9:29 Jesus was transfigured by the glory of God as He prayed. He even prayed on the cross as He was dying in extreme pain.

In Gethsemane prayer transformed Him from wavering in agony to resolute dedication to doing God’s will. Jesus was a man of prayer and an example to us all.

Prayer: Lord, as you taught the first disciples, teach me to pray
