I am the Bread of Life

Reading: John 6:27-35

Key Verse: “Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the Bread of Life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty’”  v 35

John’s gospel contains seven key phrases known as the “I Am’s of Christ”. They are statements using natural physical elements to explain the spiritual nature of Jesus character and role. As such they give us a much clearer understanding of the person and ministry of Jesus. Although the phrases contain universal, timeless truths, they are rooted in the Scriptures and culture of the day and therefore need to be understood in that context.

Isaiah 55:1-3  declares, “Come all you who are thirsty, come to the waters ... why spend money on what is not bread and your labour on what does not satisfy? Give ear and come to me; hear me that your soul may live”. Bread and water may fulfil our physical needs but to be truly fulfilled, men and woman need something more. Our inner beings, our souls, the spiritual part of us requires its own food of love, acceptance and freedom from guilt and fear. Bread may satisfy our physical hunger but Jesus offered Himself as the real bread of life that could fulfil the hunger of our souls.
