DAY 36 OF 366

Mighty God

Reading: Isaiah 9:1-7

Key Verse: “For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” v.6

Isaiah refers again to the birth of a special child who would come as a peacemaker and ruler. Most interesting is Isaiah’s reference to the coming child as “Mighty God”. Bible scholars speak of the “Incarnation” which simply means deity (or God) taking on or embodying human flesh. God never loses His divinity but His divinity is combined with humanity. He is not a hybrid 50/50 but “fully God and fully human”. The apostle Paul explained, “For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form” (Col.2:9).

In verse 6, Isaiah expresses the incarnation thus: to be born (of a woman) means the child must be human and to be called, “Mighty God” means the child must be divinely equal with God. As a human being Jesus lived a human life subject to hunger, tiredness, temptation, betrayal, pain and taxes, but also enjoying family, friendship, food and celebrations such as weddings. As God, He was born pure and so as the perfect God-Man He could therefore offer Himself as an innocent sacrifice for our sins. The divine Jesus is “one of us”.

Prayer: Jesus, my understanding is limited but I know and thank You that because You experienced human life You can fully understand me and help me in my time of need
