Paul taught that while Christians have been granted spiritual freedom through Christ, we must also use that freedom with great care. If exercising our freedom might cause a brother to stumble, we should do the right thing for our brother instead of exercising our rights. That teaching became an enduring principle for Christian living for the ages. Paul continues the discussion in chapter 9, using himself as an example for his teaching.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us” (Hebrews 12:1).
