Day 2: Communication — More Than Words
📖 “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” James 1:19 (NIV)
In any relationship, especially in marriage, communication is the bridge that connects hearts. But real communication goes beyond talking; it’s about understanding and then responding through not just words but actions. In fact, it’s not just what we say but how we say it, and even more, how well we listen.
Many couples struggle not because they don’t love each other, but because they don’t know how to express that love in ways that are safe, honest, and clear. Words can either build bridges or burn them. Tone can soothe or provoke. Silence can be a moment of peace or a wall that pushes your spouse away.
God’s Word challenges us to speak the truth in love, to be gentle in conflict, and to listen with humility. These aren’t just communication tips, they are spiritual disciplines that shape the health of your home. Communication should be a place where each partner feels heard, seen, and valued, not afraid to be vulnerable or misunderstood.
Whether you're preparing for marriage or already navigating its seasons, ask yourself: Does my communication style bring healing or harm? Am I truly listening to understand or just waiting to respond?
🛐 Prayer
Father, help us to communicate with compassion, patience, and clarity. Teach us to listen well and speak in love. Where our words have caused hurt, bring healing. Where silence has built walls, bring connection. Shape our conversations to reflect Your grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
💭 Reflection Question
Do I listen to understand or just to respond? What would it look like to truly listen with love?
