Day 1: Covenant — More Than a Promise
📖 “So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” Matthew 19:6 (NIV)
When we think of marriage, most people imagine romance, shared dreams, or lifelong companionship bound by a legal contract. However, at its core, marriage is not just a partnership, it’s a covenant. A covenant is a sacred, unbreakable commitment made before God. It’s not built on emotions, convenience, or performance, but on deliberate, daily choices rooted in love and faithfulness.
God designed marriage to mirror His relationship with His people, a bond marked by grace, sacrifice, and steadfast love. The Bible is filled with covenant language, from God’s promise to Abraham, to Christ’s love for the Church. Your marriage, too, carries this divine reflection. It is meant to endure storms, refine character, and showcase God’s goodness through two lives becoming one.
This means we don’t enter marriage lightly, nor do we abandon it when it becomes uncomfortable. We don’t just celebrate on the wedding day; we recommit every single day after. Marriage is not a destination, but a long-haul journey that should not be embarked on lightly.
Whether you're preparing for marriage or deep in the journey, ask yourself: Are we treating our relationship as a contract to be maintained or a covenant to be honoured?
🛐 Prayer
Father, thank You for the gift of covenant. Help us to view marriage through Your eyes and not as a temporary agreement, but as a holy commitment. Strengthen us to love with intention, humility, and grace. Remind us that what You have joined, no one can tear apart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
💭 Reflection Question
What would change in how you approach your relationship if you truly believed it was a covenant, not a contract?
