It is believed that 1.5 billion people (or 1 in 5 people) don’t have access to the Bible in their native language. That seems crazy when we think about how easily accessible it is in our culture. Because of that, there are entire organizations that have made it their mission and purpose to get the Bible to every single person in the native language they speak. It’s an incredible (and worthy) goal! Still, what Paul pointed out in this passage to the Corinthian church shows us just how powerful the Scripture can be. It isn’t just the knowledge, or the words, or even the language in which we read it that matters most. It isn’t about how we hear it preached, talked about, or taught in Sunday School, or church. No, Paul said that it's love that makes the difference. In fact, without love, Paul said those other things become little more than a loud, clanging gong or noisy cymbal. In other words, it all means little without love. God’s love is what illuminates the words on the pages. It’s what makes the Scriptures both powerful and meaningful. And it’s what helps the Spirit speak to those who have yet to read it in their own language.
Today, spend time in the pages of God’s Word. You can even start in 1 Corinthians 13 where we began today. As you read, look for ways you see God’s love come to life in the words on the pages.
