DAY 13 OF 15

If you have ever stayed up late at night, chances are you have seen some infomercials on TV. These ads promise all sorts of incredible things. Some lotions guarantee you’ll look twenty years younger. There are cooking tools that promise to cut meal prep in half. Some gadgets are certain to make your life easier. But if you have ever purchased any of these things, what you usually find is that there tends to be a fair amount of overpromising and under-delivering. In other words, it’s never as good as you think it’s going to be. Well, in this passage to the Corinthian church, Paul made a different kind of claim. He said that in Christ, we are brand new. Not just better, not just a step ahead, not just having an extra boost—totally and completely new! That is a pretty big promise that even the most confident infomercial would have a hard time guaranteeing! But how does that happen? How do we get to be this brand-new creation Paul talks about? By being transformed and changed from the inside out. That happens when we begin to allow the Spirit of Christ to make us this new creation. This is the Spirit that is in the Word of God and works through the Word to shape us and mold us. In other words, God’s Spirit in God’s Word makes us a new creation.

So, when we memorize God’s Word—when we live God’s Word—we are participating in a new creation work. This is how the new comes, and we are so blessed that God works in us to let us be a part of it.
