DAY 12 OF 15

Remember, the culture in which the books of the Bible were originally written was primarily a culture of oral tradition, meaning their sacred texts were passed down by word of mouth, storytelling, and collective remembering. This is a vastly different culture than the one we are a part of now, where so much of what we know, think, and believe is found in our written words and texts. So, when Moses was telling the Hebrew people to remember what God had done for them, he knew they couldn’t just go pick up a Bible or a scroll to read about it. They had to commit it to memory as a way of preserving it. They had to tell it and re-tell it to keep the memory of God’s activity alive. We may have books now to help us know what God said and did, but the practice of memorizing and committing to our memory those words is just as important. It may not carry the same weight as it did thousands of years ago as a way to keep the faith alive, but the memorizing of God’s Word keeps the memory of God’s activity alive in us. And that matters when it comes to growing and maturing our faith.

What’s one way you can challenge yourself to memorize Scripture this week?

About this Plan

Bestseller

Did you know the Bible is the best-selling book of all time? Why is the Bible so popular? Why do people keep picking it up? There’s so much more to be found in the pages of Scripture when we experience it the way it was intended. It’s more than just an ancient book written by ancient people. It’s a book designed to connect us to the God who gave it to us in the first place. And that is ultimately what makes it a bestseller!
