A Biblical Guide to Dating: The Road to MarriageSample

Risk & Courage
- There is risk in any relationship, but this is at the core of the Gospel. God pays a great price for us at the risk that we may refuse his offer.
- For men (since it is usually the men who initiate) there will always be a risk. Be courageous and follow the Lord's voice when you hear Him prompting you to pursue a romantic relationship. Remember, even if faced with rejection, your identity remains firmly rooted in Christ. So go ahead, ask her out! Grab a coffee, get to know her. Initiating a date doesn't equate to an engagement; it simply signifies your intention and interest.
- Ladies, don't hesitate to accept date invitations! In this world, sometimes a date within Christian circles feels like an impending engagement. Relax, enjoy the date, and see where it leads.
Scripture:
Genesis 24:5-8
Reflection:
Is your risk different from the risk anyone else takes in relationships?
Are you willing to take risks in pursuing a relationship?
What are you not willing to risk and why?
Application:
- If you are involved with someone, discuss the risks for both of you in pursuing the relationship further, and what scares you.
- If you are considering pursuing someone, list the risks you are unwilling to take and discuss it with someone you trust.
- Consider ways to mitigate the risk, reduce it, or remove it entirely.
- If it cannot be moved, consider ways to ensure you can confront the risk with honourable actions, communicating carefully with the other person involved.
- Pray intentionally, and see what God says through the Word and wise council.
Prayer:
Father, please help me to see your plans for this relationship. You know the risks involved for me and for them, and I ask you to show us your grace and kindness so clearly during this time. If risks are to be taken, grant me peace. If you will remove/reduce them, let it be clearly by your hand, that I might praise your name all the more.
