In today’s scripture reading we read of our Lord, Jesus Christ being mocked and scorned whilst on the cross. Christ’s kingship is like no other, and it was totally unexpected by the people of his time. He was not the conquering hero they thought the Messiah to be, but a simple northern preacher who spoke with authority, healed the sick and performed miracles. But even in this last place, the place that seemed like defeat, Christ demonstrates his kingship. Of those crucified with him one spoke in his defence and asked Jesus, “Lord remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus, recognising his sincerity and his faith, responds, ‘‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”
As you pray, pray for your own faith, that God would bestow even greater gifts of faith upon you, pray also for those who mock and scorn Christianity and Christ that they may experience Christ’s mercy and forgiveness.

Nine days of prayer (Novena) focusing on Jesus as the Universal King. The Roman Catholic Church sets aside the last Sunday of the liturgical year as the Feast of Christ the King. This study takes each of the readings from the Mass of this feast and explores a different aspect of what the Universal Kingship of Jesus looks like and means for us in our lives.
