God the rescuer is a strong image in this scripture passage. God has rescued us from the darkness of sin and death , he has redeemed us through his mercy and the forgiveness of our sins. His loving kindness flows out to us. Paul reminds us of the ultimate supremacy of Christ, as the firstborn of all creation, the instrument of creation, the image of the divine, the agent of reconciliation. It is a beautiful heart-felt piece of writing where Paul’s love of Christ flows out across the page.
As you pray, pray for God’s mercy and forgiveness of your sins, you may like to go to confession to receive sacramental absolution, pray also for the created world, for its protection and careful stewardship and in thanksgiving for its beauty and variety.

Nine days of prayer (Novena) focusing on Jesus as the Universal King. The Roman Catholic Church sets aside the last Sunday of the liturgical year as the Feast of Christ the King. This study takes each of the readings from the Mass of this feast and explores a different aspect of what the Universal Kingship of Jesus looks like and means for us in our lives.
