There's Hope For Today

DAY 91 OF 366

In 2013, I decided that I would ride my bicycle across the African continent to raise funds for Zambian missions. The journey would begin at the Atlantic and end at the Indian Ocean – a route covering 1,000 miles in 10 days. Such an effort required a higher fitness threshold than I had attained, so I hired a coach. He began by evaluating me, measuring angles, adjusting cleats, assessing wattage outputs, cadence, stroke, and form. Several adjustments were made, others suggested, but the kicker came when my coach said, “No matter what we do, you will not greatly increase your power until you strengthen your core.” Becoming a powerful bike rider looks like it’s all legs and shoulders, but the extremities are limited by the core. The core consists of many different muscles that stabilize the spine and pelvis and run the entire length of the torso. When they contract, they stabilize. When this happens, the rider is able to generate powerful movements of the extremities. Power is a core issue, but the real core of a man is not muscular-it is spiritual. What happens in our hearts affects every orbit of life – to the furthest extremity. How strong is your core? Are you guarding your heart?
