God the Son

Reading: John 1:1-2

Key Verse: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning” v 1-2

John’s gospel or record of Jesus begins with this amazing statement. That at the very beginning, (at least) two beings co-existed. These beings were referred to as the Word and God. Not only did they co-exist but they were essentially one and the same for the Word was God. This relates to the doctrine of the Trinity which is outside the scope of this simple devotional. What is important to note however, is that the Word is a divine being and that the Word became human and was given the title Immanuel – God with us. In other words, God’s Son pre-existed before He was actually born as a human being when He was given the name Jesus.

Jesus is called God’s Son but it is also correct to call Him God the Son. Therefore when we think of Jesus we are not thinking of a very spiritual human being or even a superior angel but of God Himself. During His life here on earth, Jesus was the visible human flesh and blood image of an invisible God.

Because Jesus is God, He is worthy not only of our attention to His wisdom, but also of our worship and our obedience.

Prayer: Jesus thank you that I can understand what God is like because of You
