Sowing and Reaping
Reading: Gal.6:1-10
Key Verse: “The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.” verse 8
Our understanding of the grace of God is that we receive things we do not deserve. Our independent sinful lifestyles meant that we deserved rejection by God rather than His gracious gift of salvation and acceptance. But sometimes this revelation can blind us to the appreciation that God does reward those who seek Him (Matt.7:7-11, Heb.11:6).
Paul is clear that we not only receive undeserved grace gifts such as salvation but also deserved fruits such as intimacy with God. Answers to prayer only come as a result of prayer! If we do not pray we may not receive (Jam.4:2). This truth should not make us proud like the Pharisees or rely on human effort like the Galatians but instead motivate us sow time and activity to spiritual purposes.
We do not build muscles and stamina by remaining inactive but by regular, strenuous physical activity. Likewise our spiritual fitness is largely correlated with our devotion to prayer, worship, reading God’s word, obedience to the Spirit and active involvement in the church. When we deeply engage with God He will produce a harvest of righteousness in our lives in the same way as fruit grows in an orchard (Gal.5:22-23). Let us sow to the Spirit!
Prayer: Lord I devote myself to You and Your purposes that I may flourish with the fruits of the Spirit
