Marks of the Kingdom
Romans 14:17
“For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit…”
As Christians, our focus is often on religious services and doctrine. As important as these are, we can mistake them for the essence of the kingdom. Righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit speak of transformation and sanctification from the inside out, not the outside in. Righteousness comes from the work of Christ on the cross on our behalf. It is a gift of God, received by faith. This righteousness before God gives us access to his throne room in prayer and qualifies us to receive the Holy Spirit. It is the Spirit who fills us with God’s peace and joy, not some self-effort that we employ. Transformation and ongoing growth into the image of Christ should be normal for citizens in Christ’s kingdom.
Lord Jesus, fill me with your Holy Spirit again this day, and glorify your name through your righteousness, peace and joy in my life.
