The Lord Bless and Keep You
The Lord bless you and keep you;the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance[a] upon you and give you peace.
Number 6:24-26 (ESV)
In Numbers 5-6, God laid out various “rules” to the Israelites. They might seem harsh at first, but God ended with the beautiful “Priestly Blessing”.
God spoke to Moses and told him to give Aaron, the high priest, instructions on how he should bless the Israelites (verse 22-27). According to Jewish writings, this benediction was quoted daily in the temple and synagogues. Moses acted as the mediator here. In light of the new covenant, we have even more to rejoice about as Jesus, our new mediator has died for our sins and given us direct access to God! (Hebrews 8:6)
In such a short passage, the word “Lord” is repeated three times, and “you” is repeated six times. What a reminder to us that the source of all good things is from God (James 1:17), and how passionately God wants each of us to receive His boundless love and grace.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the reminder of how much You want to be in a relationship with us. You promise us if we submit to You, You will make our paths straight (Proverbs 3:6). Help us to hold tightly to this promise. May the Lord bless us and keep us. Amen.
About this Plan
The book of Numbers, as the Hebrew name suggests, is the Israelites’ travelogue in the wilderness, from Mount Sinai to the plains of Moab, right before entering the Promised Land. Because of the Israelites’ disobedience, the 11-day journey turned to 40 years! But rest assured, God always restore His people to the place of blessings as soon as we return to Him. Come journey through Numbers with us.
