If we had to describe how we tend to see the Bible, we might say it’s like a guidebook, an instruction manual, or something else that gives us directions on how to live. In a way, that’s true. In some ways, we do get very clear ideas of how we should and should not live in Scripture. But there are other times when the Bible is not so clear, right? There are even some places where it feels like what it says contradicts what we think we know to be true. What do you do then? This passage from the book of Psalms gives us a slight shift in perspective to help us out. When we need help, guidance, or instruction, more than just going to Scripture, we can go to God. In going to God, we aren’t getting an answer or a detailed instruction manual. We are simply getting what God promises to provide: help. We don’t get a whole plan or an outlined list of instructions. Rather, we get relationship, we get presence, we get the sense that we are not in this alone. We may go to the Bible for help, but ultimately, our help comes from God. And while God can use the Bible to help us, it is God speaking through the pages of Scripture who does the helping.
