Prayers for My Adult ChildSample

For the Child Who Needs Community
“This is not good!” Moses’ father-in-law exclaimed. “You’re going to wear yourself out—and the people, too. This job is too heavy a burden for you to handle all by yourself.”
Exodus 18:17-18
Talk to God
Lord Jesus, no one grows in isolation. Nothing good happens when we live life apart from others, so I lift up my adult child who is in need of genuine community. Whether they’ve chosen a negative community, or if they are isolated in a world of porn, video games, self-harm, or addiction, please open their eyes to their need for others. Send life-affirming friends their way. Work through their isolation, producing a longing in them for the compassion of others. Please help them face themself as if they’re looking in a mirror to see what their life has become. Their burdens are heavy. I am happy to help carry them, but I cannot be the only one. Father, please send godly friends, I pray. Amen.
Think
We grow best with others. As you look back over your life, particularly the times of greatest joy, chances are people were involved.
Take Action
Reach out to a friend today who has been your community. Tell them how you appreciate them. Praise them for their amazing attributes. You’ll make their day!

About this Plan

When children move out of the house, begin an independent life, and eventually establish their own families, it can be hard to navigate what role you should play as a parent. In this devotional, Mary DeMuth gives parents a language of prayer for their grown-up children. Even though parental fears abound as the sin of this world poses ever-present threats, take your children to the Lord in prayer and know they are loved by the God of the universe.
