As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God (Psalm 42:1).
Are you daily panting after God?
The Hebrew term for “panting” conveys a strong and audible thirsting. With passion, the author exclaims the following: “My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?” (Psalm 42:2). Jesus’ preaching elevates the Word of the Lord in the Sermon on the Mount and reveals the blessings that come from seeking after God. He begins, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3). When the Bible is exalted, it brings the believer to his knees. Moreover, Jesus proclaims, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled” (Matthew 5:6). We should hunger and thirst for the living God who solely fulfills our deepest longings.
Employment Point: Seek the living God who alone can satisfy the soul's craving.
