Encountering Jesus

DAY 33 OF 49

DISCOVER:

Judas, one of the disciples and the one who would later betray Jesus, responded critically, suggesting that the ointment could have been sold and the proceeds given to the poor. However, John notes that Judas was not genuinely concerned about the poor, but rather had ulterior motives, as he was in charge of the money bag and used to pilfer from it. Additionally, Judas' response should be seen in light of his character and his growing dissatisfaction with Jesus' ministry, which eventually led to his betrayal. The mention of giving to the poor, although a noble act, was a thinly veiled pretext for his greed. These verses foreshadow Judas' ultimate betrayal, as he chose to prioritize personal gain over a deep connection with Jesus.

LEARN:

From this passage, we learn the importance of sincerity and devotion in our relationship with God. Mary's act of pouring out her most valuable possession to honor Jesus demonstrates the depth of her faith and love. In contrast, Judas' response serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of hypocrisy and insincerity within religious circles. It highlights the contrast between genuine devotion and self-serving actions that can infiltrate even the closest circles of faith.

APPLY:

This passage prompts us to examine our own motives and priorities. Are our actions driven by genuine love and devotion to God, or are we, like Judas, sometimes motivated by personal gain, recognition, or hidden agendas? It encourages us to strive for a deeper, more sincere relationship with our faith and to be mindful of our intentions when engaging in acts of service and devotion. May you be challenged to prioritize your connection with God over material concerns and to embrace a heartfelt, sacrificial commitment for the sake of getting to know the love of God in a deeper way.

About this Plan

Encountering Jesus

Join us as we walk through seven encounters with Jesus. Just as Jesus transformed these individuals, the narratives of your shame, fear, guilt, and failure find redemption when met by the grace bought by His death on the cross. Your response to encountering Jesus has the power to transform the darkness of your story into a picture of grace, and redemption. How will you respond when you encounter Jesus?
