Encountering JesusSample
DISCOVER:
John 12:3 is a verse that takes place in the New Testament of the Bible. It is part of the account of an event that occurred in Bethany, where Jesus was visiting the home of Lazarus, whom He had previously raised from the dead. During a dinner held in Jesus' honor, Mary, the sister of Lazarus, took a pound of very expensive perfume, called pure nard, and anointed Jesus' feet. The act of anointing with costly perfume was a culturally significant gesture, often reserved for honored guests or used in religious rituals. The value of the perfume, which was worth a year's wages, underscores the depth of Mary's devotion and her recognition of Jesus' significance.
LEARN:
This verse teaches us about the depth of Mary's love and devotion to Jesus. Her extravagant act of anointing His feet with expensive perfume is a symbol of wholehearted worship and adoration. Mary showed great boldness in her faith as she poured out everything for the one that she loved. It reminds us that true worship isn't about the material cost, but the sincerity and love with which we approach God. Mary's gesture also reflected her belief in Jesus as the Messiah and her understanding of His impending death as she prepared Him for burial. It illustrates the profound spiritual insight that Mary possessed, recognizing Jesus' divine nature and His mission, which was not fully understood by all those around Him.
APPLY:
The story of Mary anointing Jesus' feet challenges us to consider the sincerity and depth of our own worship and devotion. It encourages us to focus on the essence of our relationship with God, rather than superficial rituals or appearances. We can apply this by approaching our faith with a heart of genuine love and devotion, seeking to understand the deeper spiritual significance of our actions, and recognizing the divinity of Christ in our lives. Furthermore, it reminds us to be willing to make sacrifices for the sake of honoring and serving God, even when it may appear extravagant to others. Just as Mary's act was deeply meaningful, how can you aim to serve God with a spirit of selfless dedication, offering your best to Him, regardless of the opinions of those around you?

About this Plan
Join us as we walk through seven encounters with Jesus. Just as Jesus transformed these individuals, the narratives of your shame, fear, guilt, and failure find redemption when met by the grace bought by His death on the cross. Your response to encountering Jesus has the power to transform the darkness of your story into a picture of grace, and redemption. How will you respond when you encounter Jesus?
