Encountering Jesus

DAY 31 OF 49

DISCOVER:

In John 12:1-2, the text describes an event that took place in the home of Lazarus, whom Jesus recently raised from the dead, and his two sisters, Mary and Martha. This event was set in the town of Bethany, which was situated near Jerusalem. During this period in history, hospitality was highly valued in the Jewish culture, and it was customary to host guests with great care and attention. The mention of "six days before the Passover" is significant, as it set the stage for Jesus' final journey to Jerusalem, where He would face His crucifixion. The context foreshadows the impending sacrifice of Jesus, and the gathering at Lazarus' home provides a poignant backdrop for the events that will unfold.

LEARN:

The opening verses of John 12:1-2 highlight the close relationship between Jesus and the family of Lazarus, Mary, and Martha. It teaches us the importance of cultivating a personal and intimate connection with Jesus, as Mary did, by sitting at His feet and listening to His teachings. It also underscores the significance of moments of fellowship and hospitality in the life of a believer. Furthermore, the timing of this gathering reminds us that significant events can often take place in the midst of everyday activities, and we must be attentive to the where the Holy Spirit brings opportunities that may arise unexpectedly.

APPLY:

We can apply the lessons from John 12:1-2 by recognizing the value of spending quality time with Jesus in prayer, meditation on His word, and worship. Just as Mary chose to sit at His feet, we should prioritize our relationship with Him above all else. Additionally, this passage encourages us to embrace opportunities for providing hospitality, by showing love and kindness to those around us, and creating a welcoming space for others to encounter Christ. Lastly, it reminds us to remain vigilant, knowing that significant moments in our spiritual journey may arise when we least expect them, and we should be open to God's leading in our lives.

About this Plan

Encountering Jesus

Join us as we walk through seven encounters with Jesus. Just as Jesus transformed these individuals, the narratives of your shame, fear, guilt, and failure find redemption when met by the grace bought by His death on the cross. Your response to encountering Jesus has the power to transform the darkness of your story into a picture of grace, and redemption. How will you respond when you encounter Jesus?
