Living in Salvation

DAY 7 OF 7

Being led by the Spirit

Romans 8:14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons and daughters of God. 15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons and daughters by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him. (NASB)

The first thing that Jesus said when He called His first disciples was, “Come, follow me…” (Matthew 4:18-22)

When Jesus meets us in our mess, He simply says, “Follow me.” He calls us into the family of God to be His disciples. The Greek word for disciple is mathétés- “mental effort needed to think something through" – a learner; a follower of Christ who learns the doctrines of Scripture and the lifestyle they require.

Jesus takes our old sinful nature from us, and in exchange, He gives us Himself. There is no better exchange in the history of the world, not in business, not in investing, not in trading, not in anything! In this beautiful exchange, He simply asks us to follow Him.

John 8:12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; the one who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” (NASB)

If we want to know what following Jesus looks like, we study the Gospels. We know that Jesus only did what He saw the Father doing (John 5:19), and Jesus only said what He heard the Father saying (John 12:49). Therefore, Jesus is the exact example of what the Spirit wants to do. This is why Hebrews 1:3 tells us, “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being…” (NIV)

Some simple tips for following Jesus:

  • Read and pray about the Word of God daily
  • Worship Him daily and learn to host His presence as a lifestyle
  • Stay connected and accountable in the family of God
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to guide your steps and ask Him to give you the grace to take those steps

Prayer

Lord, I give you my life. Empower me to live in Your Salvation and follow You and bring You glory all the days of my life.
