The Promise

DAY 7 OF 42

David Anointed King

Listen to "David Anointed King":

Reflect

The prophet Samuel knew God and spoke His messages to the people. Yet even Samuel misjudged God’s choice for king. Instead of choosing the handsome elder son of Jesse, God chose a teenage shepherd boy — the least likely candidate.

We too make this mistake. We misjudge the hearts and characters of others, and we assume God will fulfill His promises or answer our prayers in a certain way. Before we know it, though, those assumptions are ripped to shreds. We believe none of God’s promises will fail, but we don’t realize that He works in ways far beyond anything we could ever dream — and sometimes even in ways we don’t like. After all, even Samuel didn’t expect God’s king to be a young shepherd boy. We can be confident that God’s plans are higher and better than what we can imagine.

● Think of a time in the past when God fulfilled His promises in a way that you didn’t expect or even want. How did He show His faithfulness to you, even then?

● Is there a situation in your life currently where you think God is not working, or He is working in a way you don’t like? Spend time talking to Him about it and ask Him to show you His greater purpose.
