Exodus

DAY 32 OF 56

The people of Israel were to be a sabbath people. To be a sabbath people meant to set aside certain times as sacred. For example, the chapter today says how not only should a day be set aside for sabbath, but every seven years should be a sabbath year where the land itself was to rest.

Rabbi Abraham Heschel in his book The Sabbath notes how the first thing that God calls qadosh (holy), is not a place but a day. Although setting aside space can be beneficial in our relationship with God, the Bible seems to indicate that God is much more interested in the time we set aside. Heschel goes on to say: “the sabbath itself is a sanctuary we build, a sanctuary in time” (p29).

Before the people of Israel were given a space – the land, they needed to learn how to inhabit time in God’s way. This is why the sabbath was, and remains to this day, so important to Israel. How can we enter into the sabbath rest that God has for us, especially considering what Jesus has done?
