ExodusSample
This passage has a theme of “restitution” running throughout. Restitution has to do with repayment for something lost or stolen. The society the Israelites were forming was based on fairness and justice. Today, the term “social justice” can be politically charged, but many translations call the heading before verse 16 “Laws About Social Justice.” The idea that a society should be just is a fundamentally biblical idea.
Through these laws, Yahweh was showing the people of Israel what it meant to be the people of God. Because God is a God of justice, God’s people were to be a people of justice.
What does it mean for us to be a people of justice today? Some of the laws we read about today might seem quite foreign to us, so how can we place modern rules in our lives that ensure we live as people of the God of justice?
