Palm Sunday Shout-Out from Jesus
Main Point: Jesus fulfilled prophecies of the Messiah and gave a shout-out to the kiddos.
Kids Devo:
When Jesus lived on Earth, the Jewish people celebrated a special holiday called Passover. It reminded them of how God helped them escape from Egypt a long time before that. Jesus came into Jerusalem to celebrate Passover on the Sunday before the Passover feast. We now call that “Palm Sunday.” That was the day the little lamb would have been brought into Jewish homes to live with them. So, Jesus came in on the same day the Passover lambs were being taken in. Be thinking about how Jesus might be like that little lamb. Several days later, the Passover lambs would be sacrificed. Do you think was about to happen to Jesus later that week?
People were happy to see Jesus and shouted out loud. They waved palm branches in the air! Jesus came riding on a baby donkey, just like a prophecy from a long time ago said he would. People thought he was the Messiah because he healed sick people, raised a dead man back to life, and did many miracles. Even kids were shouting and cheering for Jesus! The religious leaders tried to stop them but Jesus defended them. Can you remember what they shouted?
Jesus said the kiddos were fulfilling a prophecy found in Psalm 8:2. How cool that God used kiddos that way! It's amazing how God can use little kids to do big things. What might God use you to do?
And remember, kiddo, Grandma Goodie loves you but God loves you more!
Let's Pray:
Dear God,
Thank you for Jesus, who fulfilled prophecies of the Messiah.
Thank you for using little kids to do big things and fulfill a prophecy.
Please help me understand how Jesus is like the Passover lamb.
Amen!
Play Ideas:
- Go to a farm or a petting zoo to see and pet a baby donkey or a little lamb.
- Get a palm branch (real or artificial); wave it while shouting what the kiddos shouted that day.
- Make two teams, practice your shouts, and see who can shout the loudest.
- Pretend you are Jesus’ cheerleaders. Make up a cheer that uses some of the words the kiddos in the story shouted. Practice and perform your cheer for an audience. Instead of pom-poms, use palm branches.
- If you want to REALLY get into it, make costumes of the main characters, memorize their lines, and act out the story just the way it was told in the Bible story. You could even have someone video record your performance and share this exciting Easter story.
