God Is My Dad From A-Z

DAY 8 OF 8

G for Grace by Sara Valin

Grace is a commonly used word, and it is even a name, but what is the meaning of grace? Webster's dictionary defines grace as “the unmerited divine assistance given to humans for their regeneration or sanctification, a virtue coming from God.” In other words, grace is God giving us something we do not deserve. We don’t deserve to live, but God allowed us to and even allows us to live eternally in Heaven through believing and trusting in Jesus Christ as the Son of God. When I think of grace, it reminds me of an old church hymn, “grace grace, God’s grace, grace that is greater than all my sin.” When the song says that God’s grace is greater than my sin, it reminds me of His unconditional love. No matter what I do, He will always love me. So often, though, I forget to acknowledge that God’s love and grace extends to more than just me. From the time my father lived with my mom and me, till even afterward, I had a hard time forgiving him. The list of ways my dad dishonored and hurt us would continually run through my head. The more I began to read about God’s free and sufficient grace, the more I began to grasp that God’s grace was given to everyone, even my earthly father. This understanding helped me forgive my father's wrong choices because just as God gave me grace, I was supposed to be gracious to others. I learned to forgive my earthly father willingly, even though he may not have deserved it. Who is it that you need to forgive today?
