Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. This advice from Proverbs is directed at a king, but the church has similarly been commissioned by God to speak for the voiceless. Like a compassionate monarch, we must apply God’s power, knowledge, and interest if we are to administer justice with care, courage, and compassion.
The voice of the church is an instrument that has the ability to alleviate the suffering of the destitute. It is God’s desire that we speak for those who cannot speak for themselves, those who are absent or who are frightened.
Prayer:
Lord, I offer my voice as part of your church to speak up for those who have no voice. Use me as your instrument to uphold the rights of those who are destitute. Help me to listen and respond to the prophetic voice of the church and to speak it out. Amen.
